Summerfield, FL (February 17, 2025) – A man lost his life after a traffic accident in Marion County on Sunday morning, February 16. Information provided by local sources shows a 78-year-old man operating a white Hyundai Elantra tried to turn left from Southeast 147th Street onto US Highway 301 just before 9:00 a.m. Sunday.
A Ford Escape operated by a 53-year-old man was headed south down US Highway 301 when it struck the back of the Hyundai that was attempting to turn left. The Ford entered the shoulder of the road and struck a tree just before the tree fell onto the vehicle, killing the driver. The driver of the Hyundai refused transportation to the hospital and the Ford’s driver was pronounced deceased at the crash scene. Police in Summerfield continue to investigate.
We want to offer our sincere condolences to the deceased victim’s family. We also hope for the rapid recovery of all the injured parties.
Florida Traffic Collisions
Information provided by A Safer Florida shows that the Sunshine State has one of the highest number of yearly traffic accidents in the US. This unfortunate fact is partly caused by the large population in Florida, which contributes to a higher number of annual traffic accidents. With more and more people choosing to move to Florida, and tourists on the roadways, the risk of collisions remains high year-round.
Recent data shows that between 2010 and 2021, auto accident deaths throughout the nation have been steadly growing. In 2021, more than 42,000 people were killed in car wrecks in the US. In Florida alone, over 3,000 individuals were killed in traffic collisions that year.
