North Fort Myers, FL (October 20, 2024) – One person lost their life in a two-car accident in North Fort Myers. Emergency responders reported the incident occurred on Bayshore Road near Twin Brooks Road.
Information provided by the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) shows that a 79-year-old man in an SUV lost his life and an 80-year-old woman in a pickup truck suffered serious injuries. Troopers arrived at the scene and blocked off a portion of Bayshore Road for several hours while they worked on the investigation. FHP reports the SUV was headed east on State Road 78 (Bayshore Road), attempting to turn left onto Twin Brooks Road. The pick-up truck was headed west on SR-78 in the outside lane just east of Twin Brooks Road. For reasons still under police investigation, the SUV reportedly then drove into the path of the pickup and the vehicles collided head-on. The elderly man was pronounced deceased at the scene. Police in North Fort Myers continue to investigate the circumstances of the accident.
We want to offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim. We also hope for the full recovery of the injured victim.
Florida Traffic Accidents
Traffic accidents are a common occurrence in Florida and throughout the United States. In 2023, the Sunshine State saw approximately 397,000 traffic accidents that killed over 3,000 people. Although fatal wrecks decreased by approximately 6% compared to the previous year, traffic-related fatalities remain a substantial problem. The state also saw over 100,000 hit-and-run accidents, over 10,000 pedestrian-related deaths, and over 8,000 bicycle accidents. Traffic collisions of all types happen significantly in Florida, with it being one of the top three states with the most traffic collisions per year in the US.
Unfortunately, most of the traffic collisions that occur in the state of Florida and across the nation are caused by negligent drivers. Driver negligence has become a significant issue in the US in the past decade, causing over 90% of reported accidents. Some of the most common types of negligent driving in the country today include:
- Distraction
- Fatigue
- Speeding
- Intoxication
In one recent year, over 400,000 auto accidents were caused by drivers distracted while behind the wheel in the US. Additionally, speeding took the lives of over 11,000 people in 2022.
