Volusia Co., FL (November 18, 2024) – A man and a woman lost their lives Sunday night, November 17, after a traffic accident involving a motorcycle and a pickup truck. Information provided by the Florida Highway Patrol shows the double-fatal accident occurred at approximately 9:15 p.m. on US 17 near Lake Winona Road. A woman from Crystal River, 46, was operating a 2020 Ram 1500 when she tried to turn left onto US 17 and failed to yield to a 2007 Harley-Davidson. The motorcycle then collided with the left front end of the pickup truck. The operator of the bike, identified as a man from Holly Hill, age 57, was pronounced deceased at the scene. A passenger on the motorcycle, a woman from Jacksonville, age 53, was transported to Halifax Health Medical Center where she was pronounced deceased. The pickup truck’s driver and passenger, identified as an 11-year-old boy, sustained no injuries and remained at the crash scene. Police in Volusia County continue to investigate.
We want to offer our sincere condolences to the families of the deceased victims.
Florida Motorcycle Crashes
According to information provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were over 6,000 motorcycle accident fatalities reported in the US in 2022. In Florida alone, over 600 motorcyclists lost their lives that same year. Motorcyclists are particularly at risk of sustaining serious injuries or even losing their lives when they become involved in auto accidents. Unfortunately, the main cause of motorcycle crashes is drivers who fail to yield the right of way to motorcyclists. Most often, these drivers do not see motorcyclists because they are distracted. Distracted driving is the main cause of the majority of auto accidents in the United States, causing over 400,000 traffic collisions per year.
Statistical information regarding motorcycle accidents in Florida revealed that 97% of motorcycle accidents that occur in Florida occur in clear weather conditions. This points to the fact that motorcycles are dangerous to drive no matter what the weather is like.
