St Johns Co., FL (March 4, 2025) – A 40-year-old Orlando man lost his life on Monday, March 1 after he was ejected from a vehicle during a collision. Responders were sent to the scene of the accident on Interstate 95 North in St Johns County at approximately 10:15 p.m. Monday.
An SUV was headed north in the left lane when the driver, a 57-year-old man from Orlando, for reasons still under police investigation, lost control and spun out, colliding with a guardrail. The impact forced it to flip onto its roof, the Florida Highway Patrol said. During the collision, one of the back seat passengers, the 40-year-old man, was ejected onto the highway where he was then struck by a passing truck. He lost his life due to the extent of his injuries. The driver of the SUV and five other passengers suffered minor injuries. I-95 was closed in both directions while responders worked at the scene. Police in St Johns County continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
We want to offer our sincere condolences to the deceased victim’s family.
Florida Car Accidents
In 2022, Florida saw a significant number of auto accidents, with 397,500 reported incidents leading to over 3,500 deaths and approximately 250,000 severe injuries. This places the Sunshine State among the top states for traffic-related fatalities, following only Texas and California. Notably, some counties see more accidents than others. For example, Miami-Dade County reported over 63,000 accidents in 2022, the highest in the state.
Several contributing factors play a role in causing these wrecks. Distraction is a leading cause of auto collisions in Florida and across the nation. In 2022, over 270 people lost their lives in approximately 55,000 distracted driving incidents in the state. Speeding is also a significant contributor, as excessive speed increases the severity of crashes and reduces reaction times. Intoxicated driving remains a common problem, with impaired driving causing 355 fatal accidents that took the lives of 323 people in 2022. Additionally, aggressive driving, such as improper lane changes and tailgating, along with inexperienced driving and vehicle problems, further exacerbate the problem of severe and common auto accidents in the state of Florida.
