Florida Pedestrian Crashes
Auto accidents are an unfortunate and ongoing issue in Florida, where the state’s roadways see over 400,000 crashes each year. These accidents result in hundreds of thousands of injuries, many of which are life-altering. Nationwide, there are over 6 million car crashes annually, causing more than 3 million injuries and approximately 40,000 fatalities. The majority of these crashes stem from driver negligence, including distractions, speeding, fatigue, and driving under the influence.
Florida’s pedestrian safety is a growing concern. In 2023, pedestrian fatalities reached 706, a slight decrease from 835 fatalities in 2021 but still part of an upward trend since 2020. Speeding remains the number one contributor to pedestrian fatalities, along with distracted driving, running red lights, and neglecting crosswalk signals. The state has invested in improving crosswalk lighting, but challenges remain in curbing these preventable deaths.
