Jacksonville, FL (February 5, 2025) – A motorcyclist was killed, and two others were hurt in a car accident on Tuesday evening, February 4. The Florida Highway Patrol reports the crash happened on Interstate 295 North at the 103rd Street exit.
Police say a man was driving south in a stolen pickup truck, headed the wrong way on the interstate at approximately 4:38 p.m. He then struck a motorcycle, ejecting the rider from the bike. Another vehicle, a 2021 Acura sedan operated by a 33-year-old man from Glen Saint Mary, struck the motorcycle and the rider, who was lying on the road. The vehicle then struck the center metal guardrail. The driver of the stolen truck exited the vehicle and tried to steal another car, according to reports. He then fled the scene on foot and was last seen on the exterior of a moving semi-tractor trailer.
The motorcyclist, identified as a man from Jacksonville, age 66, lost his life at the crash scene. His name has not been reported at this time. The Acura’s driver and passenger were injured in the accident. Police in Jacksonville continue to investigate the circumstances of the crash.
We want to offer our sincere condolences to the deceased victim’s family at this time. We hope for the full recovery of the injured victims.
Florida Motorcycle Crashes
Information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that there were more than 6,000 deaths related to motorcycle accidents in the US in 2022. In Florida alone, over 600 motorcyclists were killed that same year. Motorcyclists are at high risk of being seriously hurt or even killed when they become involved in traffic collisions.
Unfortunately, drivers who fail to yield to motorcyclists cause the majority of traffic accidents that end in injuries for motorcycle riders. Most often, these drivers are not paying attention while behind the wheel. Distracted driving is the main cause of the majority of auto accidents in the United States, causing over 400,000 traffic collisions per year.
Statistics surrounding motorcycle crashes in Florida show that 97% of these wrecks occur in clear weather conditions. This points to the fact that motorcycles are dangerous to drive no matter what the weather is like.
