Hillsborough Co., FL (December 1, 2024) – A woman from Davenport lost her life on Friday, November 29, in a pedestrian crash on Interstate 4. The 23-year-old woman was fatally struck while looking for her cellphone in the eastbound lanes of State Road 400, just west of State Road 39.
Preliminary reports show she was walking along the shoulder of the roadway looking for her phone, which had fallen out of the car she was riding in. She was struck by a sedan operated by a 34-year-old woman from Brandon a short time later. When responders arrived at the crash scene, they pronounced the woman deceased. The driver sustained no injuries. Police in Hillsborough County continue to investigate the details of the accident.
We want to offer our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased victim.
Car Accidents in Florida
According to various safety reports, Florida has consistently ranked among the most dangerous states to drive in. Factors such as high rates of speeding, distracted driving, and DUIs, paired with the state’s large population—including residents and tourists—make for very hazardous conditions on the roads.
Because the state of Florida has such a high rate of pedestrian and traffic accidents, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and NHTSA often list Florida at the top of the list for traffic-related fatalities.
Between the years 2010 and 2021, pedestrian deaths in the United States have been rising. More than 7,500 pedestrians lose their lives per year, and the numbers have continued to increase. Since 2009, the overall number of pedestrian fatalities has increased by approximately 50%.
Pedestrians are at higher risk of suffering severe and/or fatal injuries in traffic accidents. Over 50% of reported pedestrian accidents in the United States are caused by negligent drivers. If you think that your loved one’s accident was caused by a negligent driver, you should consider filing a wrongful death claim. You may be eligible to collect financial compensation and more.
