Florida Car Accidents
In 2022, Florida saw a significant number of auto accidents, with 397,500 reported incidents leading to over 3,500 deaths and approximately 250,000 severe injuries. This places the Sunshine State among the top states for traffic-related fatalities, following only Texas and California. Notably, some counties see more accidents than others. For example, Miami-Dade County reported over 63,000 accidents in 2022, the highest in the state.
Several contributing factors play a role in causing these wrecks. Distraction is a leading cause of auto collisions in Florida and across the nation. In 2022, over 270 people lost their lives in approximately 55,000 distracted driving incidents in the state. Speeding is also a significant contributor, as excessive speed increases the severity of crashes and reduces reaction times. Intoxicated driving remains a common problem, with impaired driving causing 355 fatal accidents that took the lives of 323 people in 2022. Additionally, aggressive driving, such as improper lane changes and tailgating, along with inexperienced driving and vehicle problems, further exacerbate the problem of severe and common auto accidents in the state of Florida.
